How do we help those in need?

bus on journey
  • Chatterbus is a unique not-for-profit service, voluntarily managed by local people for the local community. It is operated by East Surrey Rural Transport Partnership (Tel: 01883 732791) under contract to Chatterbus CIO (charity number 1173907). Every penny donated to Chatterbus goes into the running of the service.
  • We are extremely close to the needs of the community – we provide free travel for holders of jobseekers travel cards at any time and free travel for families experiencing difficulties. Cobham Foodbank, St Andrew’s Church Cobham, Oasis and St Mary’s Church Stoke D’Abernon allocate these tickets.
  • Our new bus (our pride and joy!) was selected not least because it offers easy access for wheelchair users and those with pushchairs, and has plenty of room for shopping trolleys.
  • We have the best and friendliest drivers in Surrey! For many of our passengers, a journey on Chatterbus is not just a matter of getting from A to B, but a social highlight. For some, it is the only conversation they will have in an otherwise solitary week.
  • We are supported by the very generous donations of local bodies, in particular Surrey County Council, Elmbridge Borough Council and Chelsea Football Foundation, together with local businesses SpecSavers and Levanter Developments and others including church, community and business groups.

Friends of Chatterbus

‘Friends of Chatterbus’ was set up for a very simple reason: if Chatterbus is to stay on the road, we need to raise thousands of pounds every year.

You will have seen from the rest of the website that our bus is a fantastic community asset which has become a lifeline for many people in our community who have no other means of making the simple journeys that the rest of us take for granted.

How is this essential service funded? Fare revenues from our many loyal passengers (over 20,000 passengers journeys are made a year) and support from our local government sponsors cover about two thirds of our operating costs. This leaves a substantial gap which must be filled by donations from other sponsors, local businesses and residents in order to keep the bus on the road. Friends of Chatterbus has been set up so that local people can show their support through donations.

Join a list of volunteers we can call on to help at fund- raising events

During the year we plan to boost our funds with individual events. Can you help with organisation, publicity, or by sparing a couple of hours on the day to help with the running? Please contact Jane at jane.halliwell@chatterbus.org.uk

Business owners – please support us too!

The role Chatterbus is playing in Cobham’s community life is really important and we hope that all parts of our community will feel able to help, including local businesses.

Ticket revenue provides only a portion of the annual running costs of our bus. If you have a business in the area and would like to show your support for this community project, please help to keep our bus on the road with an on-board advertisement, donation or partner offer.

If you would like to discuss how you might make a donation, volunteer some time to help us or advertise on the bus, please email Jane Halliwell at jane.halliwell@chatterbus.org.uk – she will be very pleased to hear from you.
